According to this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from September, the average car price in August 2013 hit an astounding $31,252. Let's say you're are an average buyer with exactly that much burning a hole in your pocket today. Which NEW car would you spend it on?
For me, I'm heading to my local Scion dealer and grabbing a FR-S in the color "Raven" (confusingly, they also have a color named Asphalt...all I really want is "black"). Toss in both the TRD Performance Intake and Exhaust as well as some all weather floor mats and I could drive away for $27,119. Which is still amazingly over $4000 less than the average new car price.
As soon as I arrived home I imagine my fiance would tell me to take it back and get an actually practical car. So, I head to my local MINI dealership and grab a Clubman Cooper S in British Racing green with white racing stripes, and such niceties as heated seats ($750 in the cold weather package), sport suspension ($500), and a center armrest ($250) I manage to get the price to $31,245. Just $7 short of my max budget.
When I get this car home, I am told that Consumer Reports rates MINI as the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and back this one goes.
Finally, I go to the Mazda dealership, grab a 2014 Mazda3i GT 5 door in Jet Black Mica with the 6 speed manual (all trim levels above this are only available with a 6 speed auto), pocket the change and drive happily ever after.
Plus Mazda is running a promotion where they will donate $100 to charity for each Mazda bought or leased, and they'll even give an hour of their time just for test driving one. Check it out here: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Say you've got to buy a new car today and can't spend a penny more than $31,252, what are buying?

Can't figure out how to edit the broken image. Here's what a Jet Black Mica Mazda3 looks like:

As someone who loves to ski, hike and hit the occasional ghost town in the mountains, I got an xterra Pro-4x.
Not only can it go anywhere, but with 280 lb/ft of torque and rwd, you can easily step out the rear.
